Systems Thinking

Fall 2023

By exploring biomimicry concepts, I looked for sustainable farming solutions using systems thinking and bio-inspiration, focusing on practices like crop rotation, soil restoration, and better labor conditions. The aim is to develop a rebranding strategy that incorporates these solutions, inspired by nature, to enhance the cocoa farming system. This strategy will prioritize ethical labor, environmental care, and fostering a more resilient ecosystem.

Most local honey brands are only visible in small grocery stores or farmers’ markets, while big retailers are mostly filled without-of-state brands. It’s hard for consumers to find local honey outside of markets and honey in packaging options that are sustainable. This project looks to create a rebranding strategy that compares Faust Bee Ranch to what competitors are using, then identify the best target market and create new packaging with materials that do less harm in the environment.

Fundenmentals for Sustainable Design

Wastewater treatment is slowly shifting toward more sustainable practices, as the impact it has on humanity and the environment becomes more apparent. Many in the industry are constrained by tight budgets and staffing shortages, which often leads to reliance on cheaper, less sustainable chemicals, limiting the use of more eco-friendly alternatives. This project will brainstorm five strategies, such as design for reduction, material substitution, localization, disassembly and informatization to explore ways to improve sustainability in wastewater treatment.

 

Making the Business Case for Sustainability

The industrial fishing and aquaculture industries face increasing demand, yet many consumers remain unaware of where their seafood comes from or its environmental impact. Rising Tide aims to bridge this knowledge gap by delivering a daily newsletter to the uninformed customer and industry professional that provides accessible, up-to-date information on the industry, sustainability practices, and ethical sourcing. The objective of this project is to create a platform that educates consumers, supports business professionals that work in the industrial, while promoting sustainable seafood practices.
